Sneakers seem to be harder and harder to acquire lately. Whether it's the repeated disappointment that comes from using Nike's SNKRS or adidas' Confirmed apps, missing out on the web releases from brands like New Balance and Reebok, or heading to your local skate shop only to find the latest SB Dunks (and even those crazy Olympic kits) are sold out, the struggle for sneakerheads has never been more real. It seems everywhere you look to purchase sneakers, you end up pointing towards the resale market. At the same time, there have never been more great sneakers being released and we're not even close to seeing things slow down.
The latest in the list of unattainable sneakers is the League of Legends x Nike Dunk. You won't be able to get this extremely rare pair of Nike Dunks, though. No, not because you'll be handed an L from the SNKRS app, but because this pair is made exclusively for the winners of China's LPL League of Legends championship. Although many of you reading this are probably well aware of the League of Legends championship, there is still a lot of opportunity for bigger and better collaborations in the gaming and sneaker space.
For some perspective, the Super Bowl often times reaches 100 million viewers. The World Series had its lowest ratings in history in 2020 at around 12 million viewers. The Rio Olympics in 2016 had an average of around 25.5 million viewers from around the world. Last year's League of Legends championship peaked at over 45 million viewers for the finals. The numbers would suggest that gaming and e-sports are a bigger part of most people's lives than ever before. They would also suggest that there is more opportunity in the collaborative space between gaming and sneakers than brands realize. Yet, it still feels like gaming is not getting the full respect and appreciation.
While you most likely won't be able to get your hands on a pair of the League of Legends x Nike Dunk, as it's being reported by Hypebeast that these are for champions only, there is another option if you're a fan of League of Legends. Nike is rumored to be dropping the League of Legends x Nike Air Force 1 in August, just in time for the LPL chamionship.
