One of the many designers from Kanye West’s DONDA team to find themselves accruing massive amounts of success is Matthew M. Williams. Capitalizing on the connections and his own creativity, Williams co-founded Alyx Studio back in 2015 and within a few years, introduced one of the earliest blockchain projects in fashion in 2019. Then promptly followed that up by accepting the position of Creative Director at Givenchy, one of the world’s biggest names in luxury fashion. That’s not even getting into his experience at places like Louis Vuitton, or his collaborations with brands like Nike. While he might not be as well known to sneakerheads, his impact on fashion is equally as impressive as his DONDA counterparts, Samuel Ross, Heron Preston, Jerry Lorenzo, and the late Virgil Abloh.
The next collab from Matthew M. Williams and Nike is rumored to release on September 9th and it’s in some ways a completely new direction for MMW shoes. In other ways, it’s the same foam-injection molded approach that every brand is releasing right now. This Matthew M. Williams x Nike release is called the MMW 5, and although the blacked-out version first seen on MMW’s Instagram is likely to be the first to release, more colorways are sure to be on the way. Unlike many of the other injection molded foam shoes on the market, the shape of the MMW 5 is much more “fast” looking. The slimmer profile gives it a modern look that is much more in line with Ye’s Foam Runner than it is Crocs. The biggest (and maybe the only) downside to Matthew M. Williams x Nike MMW 5 slide is its pricepoint. The MMW 5 will cost you $220 when it drops on the Alyx Studio store in the coming weeks.
